Apparent retrograde motion is a phenomenon that results from observing a system from a fixed point within it. When one body orbits another in the direction opposite the rotation of the orbited body, it is said to be in retrograde, meaning “moving backward.” But stars and planets don't change direction; rather the phenomenon is an illusion but one nonetheless overcome by recognizing the bias of one’s particular perspective.

What I have tried to do in this series is use selections from my catalog of lunar photographs to create a sequence of images where what appears to be happening is often belied by the additional data provided. In addition to the book available here, each image in this series is available in a limited edition of two 6”x8” prints. This image, lun.r.000.09: Waning Crescent Moon, was also issued in an edition of ten 4.5”x6” prints that came with copies of the book, now sold out.

• Prints are made with Epson K3 archival pigment inks on Hahnemuhle bartya satin finish fine art paper, individually signed and dated 2020, and shipped mounted in a white conservation mat in a protective polyethylene sleeve.
